Steeped in a history of wild horses that wintered in this peaceful valley, Plains is an exemplary example of quiet Western Montana living. Plains was originally founded as Horse Plains and sometimes called Wild Horse Plains, as the local American Indians would winter their horses there to feed on the valley grasses. The name was later shortened when the Northern Pacific Railway passed through and the post office moved into town.

Within Plains are a number of historical buildings worth taking in, including a one-room schoolhouse built in 1878 and an old jail building. Families will also enjoy relaxing in the shade at one of the local parks and playing on the basketball courts, skate park, and playground equipment.

If you really want to take in the area, venture up to Pat’s Knob Lookout that sits at an elevation of 6,837 feet and gives 360-degree views of the Clark Fork. Explore over 2,500 miles of trails in the Lolo National Forest, and remember that the area is primo for picking the sometimes elusive huckleberry.

Plenty of water activities are just an hour away at the magnificent 200-square-mile Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the western United States. Its sky blue water, bordered by the majestic Mission Range, is renowned to fishermen for its cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden trout, and Mackinaw and Kokanee salmon.
