About Whitefish

Big Mountain, Big Fun

Located in the heart of the northern Rocky Mountains, Whitefish is a town like no other and quite possibly one of the most attractive and awe-inspiring cities in the United States. It sits on the west edge of Glacier National Park, surrounded by much of the same landscape that makes the park so notable. It's an area that has four seasons to enjoy and take part in, leaving this town bustling year round with visitors and residents vying for access to all Whitefish has to offer.

Whitefish is historically a railroad town, and Amtrak still has a functioning station that carries people east and west on a daily basis. The train stops at the historic Great Northern Railroad Depot. Besides acting as a functioning train station, you will also find art galleries inside and museums that include the Great Northern Locomotive #181, which was one of only seven ever built.

During the summer, there are numerous public parks to enjoy within the city. You can visit the sandy beach along Whitefish Lake and enjoy a picnic under the sun or under a shelter. The local Golf Club hosts a 36-hole course that can satisfy the most avid golfers. And, if you want to head out-of-doors and out-of-town, just a short distance, you can find places to fish, hike, camp, ride horses, or listen to music.

Also, just minutes from downtown Whitefish lies world-renowned Glacier National Park— 1,600 square miles of the most awe-inspiring mountain peaks, waterfalls, rushing streams, and glaciers to be found in North America. As the shining jewel in the “Crown of the Continent” region, Glacier Park attracts millions of visitors from around the globe each year – folks who come to hike its 700+ miles of trails, sleep in magnificent 100-year-old log hotels, explore the crags and canyons that abound, and maybe catch a glimpse of a bighorn sheep, a herd of elk, or a grizzly bear!

Fear not, Whitefish is just as bustling in the winter months, as well. As the snow accumulates, so do the visitors to Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort, sometimes referred to as 'The Big Mountain.' With a summit elevation of nearly 7,000 feet and an average snowfall of 300 inches, it's no wonder people flock from all over the world to get a taste of this powder. But, fear not, if low and slow is more your style, you can visit the Glacier Nordic Center, which has 15 kilometers of cross-country skiing for the whole family.

Because of its size and the number of people that visit, you can find all the amenities of a big city in Whitefish. Find tasty local craft beer at the Great Northern Brewery, great local shops selling local arts and crafts, local gourmet food, and other items from all around the world. Although the downtown has great shops and even better views, if you're looking for a truly unique place to eat, ride the gondola up to eat at the summit of Big Mountain.

It has been said that Whitefish is an island of culture, surrounded by an ocean of mountain recreation. From live theatre performances by Whitefish Theatre Company, art galleries in downtown Whitefish, and live music by the Glacier Symphony Orchestra, there is no shortage of the arts.
